The emphasis on this voyage is on exploring the east coast of Spitsbergen, the large island of Nordaustlandet and locations where sightings of polar bear are anticipated. If the route is ice-free, sail around Nordaustlandet, past the island of Kvitoya - about as remote as you can get in Svalbard!
Alternatively take the Hinlopen Strait, which is every bit as interesting and still allows visits to parts of Nordaustlandet. The exact route to circumnavigate Spitsbergen will be influenced by the remaining pack ice. Depending on the ice conditions, this voyage will follow either a clockwise or anticlockwise course. Both routes offer the possibility of some truly rewarding wildlife encounters, with a good chance of seeing walrus, seal, reindeer and arctic fox on the tundra. At this time of year, it may also be possible to see young Brunnich’s guillemots leaping from their cliff ledge nests, to start their winter migration.
Route of Voyage
Please note the voyage route and daily itinerary is subject to ice and weather conditions therefore flexibility is the key to enjoying your expedition voyage to the full. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
