There is no better way to explore the stunning Spitsbergen coastline than on a sailing holiday on the beautiful schooner The Noorderlicht. Built in the early years of 20th century, this two masted, 46m vessel has been re-rigged and re-fitted so it can sail impressively through icy Arctic waters.
Sailing is an incredibly peaceful and unobtrusive way of navigating in this region. Imagine gliding silently past spectacular scenery and watching for whales and dolphins. Your voyage around Spitsbergen will combine both sailing and wildlife watching at sea and shore excursions. This voyage focuses on rewarding wildlife encounters, spectacular scenery and visits to historical and geological sites. A variety of Arctic wildlife will be seen which will hopefully include walrus, polar bears, reindeer, ringed and bearded seals and huge bird colonies.
As you set sail it’s all hands on deck - everyone gets a chance to help out with crewing the vessel and taking watch. No previous experience is needed, just a sense of adventure and a willingness to be part of a very special expedition.

The Voyage
This sailing voyage focuses on the north coast of Spitsbergen visiting key wildlife and historical sites. Highlights of the journey include a spectacular cruise along the impressive front of July 14th Glacier and visits to beautiful Magdalenafjord with its large seabird colonies. On this voyage you will also visit stunning Raudfjord, where an exceptional variety of wildlife can be seen including ringed and bearded seals, seabirds and possibly polar bears and belugas. On the way back to Longyearbyen visit the remains of Smeerenburg, the largest 17th century whaling settlement on Spitsbergen.
