Journey to the High Arctic and experience a dramatic solar eclipse on an adventurous voyage circumnavigating Spitsbergen. The total eclipse will only be visible from a narrow corridor in this region on 1st August 2008. Plans are to position the Aleksey Maryshev in the centre of the eclipse path across the earth, surrounded by icy vistas and looming mountain peaks. NB the extent of the sea ice will determine the chances of reaching the zone of totality in this area.

Renowned for wildlife watching opportunities both on land and in the marine rich coastal waters, you can choose whether to explore this last frontier of the inhabitable world by joining our solar eclipse departure, one of our exclusive group departures or to remain flexible with dates and join a standard voyage (travelling independently from the UK to Spitsbergen – our team will be pleased to assist you with tailor-made arrangements).
Our most popular voyage, combined with a memorable solar eclipse !
Our Around Spitsbergen Special is unsurprisingly the most popular arctic voyage amongst our customers – offering fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities and an amazing ice-filled experience. Jo Cooper, Sales Executive at Discover the World raved about her experiences onboard our Around Spitsbergen voyage last summer:
“One of the highlights of my trip was being at the front of the ship as we broke through the pack ice - it's an amazing feeling! We also saw about 40 polar bears in the distance – there is nothing better than seeing polar bears in their natural habitat!"

Please note the voyage route and daily itinerary is subject to ice and weather conditions therefore flexibility is the key to enjoying your expedition voyage to the full. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Travelling independently flights from the UK to Spitsbergen are normally via Oslo with Scandinavian Airlines. Similarly, we shall be happy to discuss your travel plans should you wish to extend your holiday. Please contact our team for flight and extension options.

The Itinerary
The day by day programmes of the Spitsbergen Eclipse cruises focus on the Total Solar Eclipse of 1 August (9.40 – 9.50 UT northeast of Nordaustlandet). The centre of totality, with a duration of just over 2 minutes, runs in a northwest – southeast band, with a width of about 60 n.miles, on a distance of 60 n.miles northeast of Kvitøya. Chances that we can get into this center with our ships are less than 20 %, depending on the extent of the sea-ice. The edge of the totality, with a duration of 1 second, is about 30 n.miles northeast of Storøya and runs through Kvitøya. Chances that we can get into the zone of totality in this area are around 50 %, depending on the extent of the sea-ice. In essence our Solar Eclipse departure will offer the same landings and shore excursions as on our standard Around Spitsbergen voyages, although the voyage route and daily itinerary is subject to ice and weather conditions therefore flexibility is the key to enjoying your expedition voyage to the full. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. To read the detailed itinerary please
