| Introduction |
Lapland is not a country. It is a region of great natural beauty which covers a large area of northern Sweden, Finland, Norway and part of Russia’s Kola Peninsula. Without definitive borders, apart from coastal sections, it is difficult to pinpoint where it begins and ends but one thing is certain, it has an allure all of its own.

Lapland is the cultural region inhabited by the indigenous Sami (pronounced Sar-mee). Over 60,000 Sami live across Lapland and with at least 2000 years of tradition behind them, their influence and many of their customs are still much in evidence today.
Although this is the 21st century and many Sami are semi-nomadic, their lives are inextricably linked to the reindeer and reindeer herding.
Any visit to Lapland will no doubt be touched by the Sami and their fascinating culture in one way or another. |
