Namibia

Exciting, safe and diverse, a country whose every facet is beyond our normal experience and the people so welcoming that you return home with a completely new view of life. With a captivating landscape that is different to anywhere else on earth, rugged, wide open spaces, a proximity to nature and a small, culturally diverse population we might still be talking about Iceland, yet this is Namibia.

Ideal for Student Visits

This southern African nation boasts spectacular sand dunes, coastal wilderness, an abundance of wildlife and the world’s oldest desert, the Namib. The extraordinary variety of landscape, climatic environment and cultural experience is so impressive as to provide a wide range of case studies in most subject areas. Deserts & Geology

Namibia is a country rich in natural resources. Mineral mining and a thriving fishing industry are the most obvious examples of economic wealth, but from a visitor perspective, Namibia’s real wealth can be measured in its timeless landscapes and pristine nature, which has been largely unchanged by man’s impact. Two great deserts, ancient gorges, unspoilt coastline and expansive savannah form the most recognisable features of a country whose popular visitor sites include the stunning sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the coastal resort of Swakopmund, the geological phenomenon of Fish River Canyon and the vast game reserve of Etosha National Park.

Etosha National Park

The jewel of Namibia, Etosha was proclaimed a national park in 1907 and covers an area of 22,720 square kilometres comprising saline desert, savannah and woodland with the great Etosha Pan its dominant feature. For much of the year, this is an expanse of white, cracked mud, which shimmers with mirages and provides the backdrop for some rewarding wildlife encounters. Of the large herds that roam the region, many are unique to Southern Africa, such as black rhino, impala, zebra, lion, giraffe and antelope. During the dry season these animals gather around the sparse waterholes providing excellent viewing opportunities.

The Capital

Namibia’s centrally located capital city Windhoek lies in the mountainous heart of the country and is the hub from which all the road and rail networks disperse. Complimenting the country’s many natural attractions this is a pleasant, modestly sized city, where modern skyscrapers blend with historic buildings dating back to a colonial past. This is a city with a continental atmosphere but an African tempo.
