Heading west from the attractive fishing town of Hofn, this study area focuses on the south side of Iceland's largest icecap, Vatnajokull. Dominating the region, roughly a dozen glaciers spill down from its icy domed plateau to a vast flood plain formed of volcanic debris from successive sub-glacial eruptions.
The most accessible of the glaciers are in Skaftafell National Park and together with the stunning glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, provide the principal attractions of this area. Heading westward along the south shore the tour incorporates sections of our South Iceland study visit to allow you to experience as wide a range of phenomena as possible.
