The breathtaking Snaefellsnes Peninsula is the backbone of this study area. The western end is dominated by a huge shield volcano upon which is the Snaefellsjokull icecap. The coastline is both beautiful and varied and is backed by volcanic landforms of various kinds. It is hardly surprising that this landscape inspired Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'.
