If you like exploring independently, why not consider a fly & drive holiday. Many of Iceland’s most beautiful places are accessible year round and by going out of season, you may find you have them practically to yourself.
|
Iceland’s autumn, winter and spring scenery can be exhilarating and very beautiful. Sometimes cloaked in snow, at other times just dusted with a fine powder on the mountain summits, the landscape is like no other in Europe. Waterfalls are often partfrozen and decorated with huge icicles, while hot springs send out billowing steam clouds in the crisp, clean air and lava flows sparkle with a frosty glitter. Of course it can also be wet and windy but whatever the weather you are certain of a warm welcome from the locals. With the freedom to go as you please, uncluttered roads and magnificent scenery, touring by car at this time of year can be both interesting and enjoyable.
As Icelandic weather, whatever the season, can be unpredictable and changeable, we find our clients are happiest when driving 4WD vehicles. On some routes driving conditions, weather or surface-related, can be quite different to those experienced in the UK but with a 4WD vehicle (with studded tyres) and a little extra care, driving is both pleasurable and safe.
