Iceland Holiday | Summer | Horse riding holidays |
Trail of Hope
|
| Introduction |
Intermediate Ability |
|
| Based in Iceland’s remote North West region, this tour offers the chance to experience the unique comfort of the Icelandic horse in a variety of wonderful and pristine landscapes. Riding through rivers and valleys, across open plains and sandbars you’ll even follow an invigorating trail across a shallow lake whilst driving a herd of free-running horses ahead of you. This tour is all about the simple pleasure of riding the Icelandic horse in its natural environment. |
Transfer by coach from Reykjavik to Hvammur Farm on the edge of the Vatnsdalur Valley, which is the base for this holiday. This spectacular setting was chronicled in the Icelandic Sagas and there are some excellent riding trails in the surrounding area, such as that which leads across the Thingeyrasandur sandbar to Lake Hop. Here the trail extends right across the lake, which is the fifth largest in Iceland, proving quite unforgettable.
As you explore this fascinating area, visit Borgarvirki, an impressive fortress made out of basalt strata dating back to the Viking era, discover the beauty of the Vatnsnes Peninsula and witness an offshore basalt rock, which is home to many seabirds and hopefully see large numbers of seals resting on the beach. Throughout the trip you’ll experience good riding trails that are perfectly suited to the special gait of the Icelandic horse, the tolt, allowing you plenty of time to perfect this quite unique riding style.
The return coach trip to Reykjavik follows Kjolur highland route and provides a fitting end to a wonderful tour. Take a dip in the natural hot springs at Hveravellir, drive between the imposing glaciers Hofsjokull and Langjokull before reaching the thundering waterfall Gullfoss and the well-known geothermal area Geysir.
Enjoy hearty home-cooked meals each evening in a peaceful countryside location and sleep in comfortable 2 to 4-bed rooms throughout the trek and one night in a guesthouse in Reykjavik at the end of the tour. Facilities will be shared on all nights.
