| Probably Iceland’s best known area of natural beauty, Lake Myvatn in the North East of the country is an area rich in volcanic and geothermal features as well as being a prolific bird breeding ground. The lake is backed by impressive mountains while lava pillars, pseudo craters, bubbling mud pools and steam vents give the area a surreal quality that cannot fail to enchant. |
| This tour was nominated one of the 10 best trails in the world by the Sunday Times. |
This tour is an absolute classic and as an introduction to Iceland, is a revelation - nominated by the Sunday Times as one of the 10 best trails in the world. Journey through striking landscapes with each day offering new scenery and impressions – from the volcanic features of Lake Myvatn to the stunning waterfall Godafoss.
As well as riding on some highland tracks ideal for experiencing the tolt, you’ll also have the opportunity to take a whale watching trip out into scenic Skjalfandi Bay. Expertly guided by a local host with a special interest in geology you’ll learn much about nature and the country whilst riding through an area that incorporates a mountain plateau, deep earthquake fissures, fertile valleys, fast flowing rivers and natural springs.
One day out of the saddle allows for a sightseeing trip around Lake Myvatn. The fourth largest lake in Iceland, Myvatn is renowned for its rich bird-life and fascinating volcanic oddities, while nearby Krafla with its steam vents, lava fields and explosion craters provide a reminder of the raw power below Iceland’s surface.
Staying in sleeping bag accommodation throughout the multi-centre trek, 3 nights will be spent on a local farm with its own hot tub while 2 nights will be spent out on the trail. A night in Reykjavik both at the start and finish of the tour will be spent in a guesthouse in Reykjavik offering shared facilities.
