South West IcelandDiamond Circle

Introduction
Experienced Ability
Probably Iceland’s best known area of natural beauty, Lake Myvatn in the North East of the country is an area rich in volcanic and geothermal features as well as being a prolific bird breeding ground. The lake is backed by impressive mountains while lava pillars, pseudo craters, bubbling mud pools and steam vents give the area a surreal quality that cannot fail to enchant.

This 7-night trek provides an alternative to the Northern Exposure for those requiring a higher standard of accommodation. Again, it is based around Lake Myvatn, which is one of the most fascinating regions in the north, with the key sights often being referred to as the Diamond Circle.

Boasting extensive bird life and a host of volcanic oddities, such as pseudo craters, lava pillars, tectonic rifts, mud pools and steam vents Myvatn is one of the treasures of Iceland. Offering some terrific highland trails through valleys and lava fields, you’ll really be able to get to grips with the unique gait of the Icelandic horse, the tolt.

Again, a sightseeing bus tour is included allowing time to visit some of the more well-known sights around the lake. At the end of the tour there is also the option to take a whale-watching boat trip out from Husavik Harbour. With one of the best records for whale sightings in Europe, look out for minke whales, harbour porpoises and sometimes humpback.

Benefiting from the same experienced and knowledgeable hosts as used on the Northern Exposure trek, you’ll be in safe hands throughout. Each night of the trek is spent in comfortable beds in double or single rooms. Bathroom facilities are shared but a hot shower is available every night. In Reykjavik, guesthouse accommodation with shared facilities is used.

Maximum on this tour: 16 participants
