| The North |
| The north of Iceland has some of the island's highest mountain ranges, beautiful fjords, offshore island and fertile valleys. Though snow can be expected in winter, summers are often warmer and sunnier than in the capital. Many of the historical events that shaped Iceland's turbulent early history took place in the region and there are saga sites, restored turf farms and interesting churches to visit. |

| Akureyri & Eyjafjordur |
Bisecting the mountainous region is ling and deep Eyjafjordur. Along its shores are the fishing villages of Dalvik and Hauganes, from where whale watching trips set out to cruise the scenic fjord in search on minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and occasionally humpback whales. A visit to the islands of Hrisey or offshore Grimsey, which is the only part of Iceland to touch the Arctic Circle, are further options. Both are inhabited and host substantial sea bird colonies.

| Akureyri |
| The largest town in Iceland outside of the Reykjavik area, Akureyri (pop. 15,000) is a great base for a short stay. A higher than average sunshine record and sheltered location on the shores of Eyjafjordur, allow for colourful gardens and tall trees. With an attractive historic centre, shops and museums and parks, there is plenty of interest in the town, which started to develop in the 18th century after a trade post was set up on the shore of the fjord. The idyllic valley at the head of the fjord invites further exploration, while for walkers, its mountainous surrounds offer an inspiring hiking. All year round, a range of excursions are offered from Akureyri including trips to the wonderful Lake Myvatn area. |

| Skagafjordur |
| A fertile farming district and broad valley steeped in the intrigue and drama of Iceland's 13th century civil war. The beautiful turf church of Vidimyri and restored turf farm of Glaumbaer are key attractions. The glaciated mountains and valleys to the east are among the most dramatic and beautiful in Iceland. |
