Iceland Excursions and activities from Reykjavik (Summer)

Iceland is a land of contrasts, not only because of its amazing range of landscapes and natural wonders but also because of the wealth of activities that can be enjoyed there. We are pleased to offer a selection of trips and excursions available around the country that can greatly enhance any holiday.

 

All our excursions from Reykjavik are offered by experienced local companies. Unless otherwise stated they are accompanied by an English-speaking guide, though commentary may also be given in other languages.

Please note prices stated are per person – excursions subject to availability and possibly minimum numbers, and/or adverse weather conditions. We cannot be held responsible should part or all, of the excursion be cancelled or altered due to such conditions. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Group sizes vary and unfortunately we have no control over the number of people on each trip. Lunch is not included with any of the excursions, unless otherwise stated. It is advisable to pre-book to ensure availability and price, which cannot be guaranteed when booking locally.

An introductory coach tour contrasting the colourful historic centre with newer parts of the city. Also visit the surrounding towns, such as Bessastadir, the presidential residence and Hafnafjordur. Child 12-17 years £14 / 11 and under free.

The classic tour of the famous trio of sights: the rainbowmisted waterfall Gullfoss, which many consider Iceland’s finest; Geysir with its spouting geysers and colourful hot springs; Thingvellir, the ancient assembly site and a renowned beauty spot. Also visit Nesjavellir, Hveragerdi, the crater Kerid and the historic church at Skalholt. This is a great day out with plenty of variety. Child 12-17 years £29 / 11 and under free (6 hour trip 12-17 years £23 / 11 and under free).

.A trek on the sure-footed Icelandic horse can be enjoyed even by first-time riders. These alert, willing animals, with a friendly nature, are a pleasure to ride in their natural surroundings. The 1 to 2 hour treks take place in the lava fields surrounding Mount Helgafell volcano and are accompanied by an expert rider. Further details on request. S02 REYKJAVIK WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCHING

Search for cetaceans and seabirds off the coast of Reykjavik on a 3-hour trip on board the vessel, Elding. Around 90% of trips enjoy sightings of white-beaked dolphins or minke whales and occasionally other species such as humpback and orca along with puffins, fulmars, gannets and kittiwakes. Transfers to and from your hotel to the harbour are included. Child 7- 15 years £17 / 6 and under free.

The Blue Lagoon

The award-winning Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s premier attractions and is conveniently located close to Keflavik International Airport. Set amidst a field of black basalt lava, the temperature in this stunning lagoon averages a relaxing 35-40°C and powder- blue mineral rich waters mix with seawater. The concept is ingenious, the experience therapeutic and totally relaxing. No wonder many Icelanders attribute their well-being to bathing in these waters, which have many beneficial properties. All prices include entry to the Blue Lagoon.

This tour explores the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, the lava cones and craters of different shapes and sizes and the bridge between continents and the lighthouse on the westermost tip. Bathe in the Blue Lagoon before heading back to Reykjavik.

Superjeep Safaris

The specially customised 4WD vehicles can drive almost anywhere, glide over snow, traverse rivers and climb steep slopes. The drivers show just how versatile the vehicles are on an exciting day trip into the wilds beyond the capital. The itineraries given here may vary according to the weather and season.

Please note snowmobiling is based on two sharing a machine and drivers require a valid licence. For single rider there is a supplement of £32. Children can ride as passengers, but must be 10 years or over. Snowmobile trips are offered throughout the winter months but are weather and snow dependent.

This great day out starts with a drive through the Hengill Massif to Nesjavellir, a power project that pumps hot water to the capital. Then it’s on to scenic Thingvellir, a national park and site of the ancient assembly, the Althing. From here take the mountain road to Laugarvatn, visit Gullfoss and Geysir. On the way back, see the crater Kerid and Hveragerdi, the greenhouse village. Minimum 2 passengers.

South Iceland is a lowland region of lush farmland, glaciers, sandy coastline and striking waterfalls. This is also an area of historical significance. Travel up the Myrdalsjokull Glacier where you can opt to go snowmobiling (at additional cost). During this tour, stand behind a plummeting waterfall, see black sand beaches and rugged cliffs. Tour includes a stop at Hveragerdi.

The day begins with a drive through the beautiful wide plains of southern Iceland before climbing through the spectacular Thjorsa Valley. Crossing rugged lava fields, unbridged mountain rivers and sprawling arctic deserts, reach Landmannalaugar, a landscape of sweeping mountains and hot and cold springs which mix together to create the ideal setting for a relaxing bathe. Continue driving over rough mountain tracks to the foot of Mount Hekla, the most active volcano in Iceland.

Head along the south coast to Thorsmork, a beautiful valley surrounded by three glaciers. This magnificent area offers a unique composition of glaciers and rocks, not forgetting the exhilarating drive through glacial rivers. On the way, try out the black sand beaches on the south coast and make a stop at a glacial lagoon by Gigjokull. In Thorsmork, hike to the Stakkholtsgja fissure.

A magnificent sightseeing flight over the Tindfjallajokull glacier; Mount Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano; Thingvellir National Park; Gullfoss and the famous Geysir geothermal area. Also fly over Thorsmork and the colourful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar.

S03 ULTIMATE ADVENTURE - SNOWMOBILING AND GLACIER LAGOON
Price: £408 Child 11 and under £204.
Duration: 12 hours
Minimum Passengers: 2 persons
Departures: at at 07:30 (Jun- Aug) Mon, Wed, Thu & Fri.

On arrival at Hofn, transfer by coach to the amazing Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon for a trip amongst the icebergs. Seals can often be seen playing in the lagoon. Continue to Vatnajokull Glacier in time for lunch (not included) and then slip into protective suits, helmets and gloves. Take a snowmobile ride on the glacier (approx. 1 hr) before returning to Hofn for the flight back to Reykjavik.

S04 WHALES & NATURAL WONDERS

Fly to Akureyri in the north and travel by coach to Godafoss, an impressive symmetrical waterfall. Continue to Myvatn, a beautiful lake surrounded by lava and craters then to the town of Husavik. Board a converted. Arrive Husavik and board a converted fishing boat for a 3-hour whale watch in Skjalfandi Bay. With luck, see minke whale, white-beaked dolphin and harbour porpoise, though other species also appear from time to time. Return to Akureyri for the flight back to Reykjavik.

A world apart, Greenland is just a short flight from Iceland, yet it couldn’t be more different. Fly west over the pack ice to Kulusuk, a community on the remote and rugged east coast. In clear weather, enjoy stunning views of the inland icecap as the aircraft comes into land. Walk to Cape Dan and observe life in a traditional fishing and hunting village. There is time to stroll around the village, purchase handicrafts or even strike up an acquaintance with some of Kulusuk's 360 inhabitants. Weather permitting, see a demonstration of kayak rowing and the ancient drum dance. Return to Reykjavik by air.

Fly to this cluster of offshore islands, which came to fame in 1973 when a volcano erupted and destroyed much of the main town. Take a coach tour to view the crater, the new lava and sights of the town. Afternoon is free to explore or take an optional boat trip to the bird cliffs. Fly back late afternoon.
