This holiday allows you to be more than a passenger in the sledge as you experience the total satisfaction and joy of driving your own team of dogs. With vastly experienced guides and a ground operator who pioneered selfdrive husky sledging tours for the novice, this holiday is more thrilling than most similar ones offered elsewhere.
The ‘whoosh’ of the sledge runners on snow and the panting of the ever-eager dogs are the only sounds you will hear across the beautiful, silent landscape. It is only when the sledge stops that the dogs become more vocal! Sledging days can prove demanding especially on arms and shoulders so these trips are unsuitable for children or those without a good general level of fitness. Our consultants are on hand to discuss which trip might be best for you. Whilst sledging, remember to be on the look out for Arctic wildlife and the telltale signs of footprints in the snow – possibly even spot a moose! And at this latitude, when the skies are dark, keep your fingers crossed for an appearance of the northern lights!
Once at the Mushers Lodge, the participants on the 3-night trip have an introduction to the dogs and an expert briefing before setting off on trails through crisp, sparkling wooded landscapes the following morning. The 4-night trip participants are thrown in at the deep end – with an airport transfer by sledge to the Mushers Lodge. Okay, this time just as passengers! The longer trip also follows forest trails but extends to higher ground, weather permitting. As the longer trip spends an additional night at the Wilderness Lodge and obviously covers further and more varied ground, it is suited to participants with a higher level of fitness.
The Wilderness Lodge is ‘home’ for one or two nights depending on your chosen trip. The overnight accommodation is bunk-bed style, in shared rooms or cabins. It’s pretty rustic with no electricity supply but thankfully it’s heated! There are basic washroom facilities, a wood sauna and an outside toilet.
On the penultimate day of the trip, say farewell to the dogs and exchange paw power for horsepower, arriving in style at the ICEHOTEL by snowmobile. As you approach this magnificent construction, you’ll be taken by the sheer size of it, most certainly not your average igloo! The final night will be spent at the ICEHOTEL after you’ve had a guided tour and perhaps a warming vodka cocktail in the ABSOLUT ICEBAR?
