You’ll be running a route that winds among craters and lava flows. In fact, Lake Myvatn is surrounded by more amazing volcanic features than any other place in Iceland. There are fortress-like lava pillars, clusters of moon-like pseudocraters, gaping fissures, ash cones, steam vents and bubbling mud pools. It’s an incredibly beautiful place, ringed by brooding flat-topped mountains and dotted with pockets of birch woodland. It’s also the scene of a great wildlife event each summer when as many as 20,000 ducks settle in for the breeding season.
We don’t expect you to try bird watching and running at the same time, but once you’ve run your race, you can relax and enjoy the areas many natural attractions, including the amazing Nature Baths, where you can soak away the aches and pains in a giant lake-sized therapeutic geothermal bath. Choose from 3km, 10km, half marathon or marathon. We feel confident you’ll want to stay and discover more of Iceland’s scenery once you’re there so you can combine the Myvatn Marathon with a whole range of independent or escorted travel arrangements of your choice.
