This trip promises to give you more than a taste of Iceland. It begins with a dip in the worldfamous Blue Lagoon so be sure to pack your swimming costume and towel in your hand luggage as you’ll be thrown in at the deep end – not literally of course, but within 90 minutes of landing, you’ll be soaking in the warm, therapeutic waters of this geothermal wonder.
You’ll get to see most of the island’s major attractions, natural wonders such as the wild romantic glacial valley of Thorsmork – valley of Thor, God of Thunder. Many people consider Thorsmork one of the most striking valleys in Iceland, and with its breathtaking mountainous back drop, glaciers, fast flowing rivers, rugged rocks, huge boulders and diverse vegetation, you’ll soon see why. Driving through some of these glacial rivers can be a thrilling experience and a bumpy one too!
Visit Skogar and see the magnificent waterfall before heading down to the black sand beaches and dramatic cliffs along the south coast. The famed ‘ Golden Circle’ route is also on the list - see three of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders: thundering Gullfoss, the fascinating Geysir geothermal area and onwards to historic Thingvellir, a rift valley and the first place in Iceland to receive UNESCO’s World Heritage status. This is the site of Iceland’s ancient Parliament and where two tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart, separating North America from Europe.
Finally, travel up to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, dominated by the snow-capped volcano and glacier. Explore the area, including the tiny harbour, sea stacks and bird cliffs at Arnarstapi.
The 4WD minibus is driven by an expert driver/guide and during this trip he’ll put the vehicle through its paces, ensuring this isn’t like sitting in a coach and watching sedately through the window! Short and easy walks at each stop ensure the group, with no more than 12 participants, doesn’t get too used to sitting down and besides, with the photographic opportunities this trip presents, you’ll want to have the best possible vantage point.
Accommodation is in rooms with private facilities at a range of good quality comfortable 3 star establishments (click here for further details). Please note if the trail to Thorsmork Valley is impassable, the tour will continue to the Hekla volcano and Thjorsardalur. Other changes to the route may occur due to weather or road conditions.
