This multi-centre holiday combines hotel stays with coastal cruising. Finnmark is a wild and wonderful area of northern Norway which boasts spectacular scenery, from rugged island seascapes to vast mountain plateaus. This coastal adventure starts in Tromso and travels northwards the top end of mainland Europe, throughout which endless skies provide ample opportunities for aurora sightings.
Who for? Northern lights and Arctic enthusiasts and photographers
Fly far above the Arctic Circle to the city of Tromso, the largest city in Northern Norway and Gateway to the Arctic. Steeped in history, this vibrant city provides a perfect base from which to visit its many attractions or try one of the optional excursions on offer, such as dog sledding or snowmobiling.
From Tromso, set sail on the Hurtigruten coastal voyage for Finnmark. This region lies along the same latitude as Alaska to the West and Siberia to the East. Although inland temperatures can dip well below zero, the Gulf Stream ensures the coastline and, more importantly the harbours, do not ice over meaning that this remote Arctic region can be fully explored.
As you voyage north, winding between islands and fjords, you’ll swear it gets darker each night, the ‘big skies’ lending themselves perfectly to keeping watch for the aurora. Honningsvag is your first port of call where we highly recommend the optional excursion to Nordkapp (North Cape). The snow covered landscape en route is empty, except for herds of reindeer which provide a glimpse of true Arctic scenery.
Enjoy dinner on board the Hurtigruten before arrival in Batsfjord. Overnight at the comfortable Polar Hotel, enjoy a morning King Crab Safari before a scenic drive to Kongsfjord. Here you stay at Kongsfjord Guesthouse, a lovingly restored 19th century farmhouse in an enviable location boasting sweeping views over the fjord. Activities here include snow-shoeing, ice fishing, bird watching boat trips and king crab fishing.
Fly from Berlevag and enjoy the magnificent views from air before arriving in Kirkenes. While staying here you can try your hand at a winter activity and see the Kirkenes Snow Hotel (open 20 Dec-20 Apr, additional cost) - you can even opt to spend a night there.
Please note sightings of the northern lights cannot be guaranteed.
Day 1 arrive Tromso fly from UK to Tromso via Oslo. Spend 2 nights at the Thon Hotel Tromso or upgrade to the Rica Ishavshotel.
Day 2 Tromso time to explore Tromso and perhaps visit the Arctic Cathedral, Polar Museum and Polaria Centre or soak up the atmosphere at one of the vibrant cafés in the city centre. There are many optional excursions on offer.
Day 3 Hurtigruten enjoy optional activities or have time at leisure before joining the Hurtigruten which sets sail at 18:30 - dinner and overnight onboard.
Day 4 Honningsvag-Batsfjord arrive in Honningsvag at 11:45. Time to explore the town or take an optional excursion to North Cape. The Visitor Centre at the top of the 307m cliff includes a super widescreen film presentation of a helicopter flight over the area - not to be missed! Outside is the much-photographed steel globe at the end of the promontory. The ship will set sail again at 15:15, time to relax and enjoy the dinner on board before arriving in Batsfjord at 00:30. Transfer to Polar Hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 5 Batsfjord - Kongsfjord morning King Crab Safari before a scenic drive to Kongsfjord, where you can have the King Crab prepared and cooked for your enjoyment. Check in to Kongsfjord Guesthouse for a 2 night stay. With next to no light pollution in this area, Kongsfjord offers good chances to star gaze and view the aurora borealis.
Day 6 Kongsfjord time to relax and explore the area or take one of the optional excursions. Perhaps try out one of the kicksleds that are provided free of charge at the guesthouse.
