Ross Sea

Named after the first explorer to push trough this intimidating ice-shelf back in 1842, James Clarke Ross, the Ross Sea area has become increasingly popular with tourists over the past 10 years.
Follow in the footsteps of some of the world’s greatest explorers on a voyage to the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. The starting point for the legendary South Pole expeditions of Scott and Amundsen, this area of the continent is extremely remote and therefore challenging to reach. Voyages depart from Australasia and more time is spent at sea taking in the lesser-visited and inspiring sub-Antarctic islands of Macquarie and Campbell, home to rare wildlife such as yellow-eyed penguins and vast numbers of nesting albatross.
One of the main reasons to visit this fascinating frozen wilderness is to see the historical huts the original explorers used on the very first expeditions into this challenging continent. This coupled with the Dry Valleys and the amazing Ross Ice Shelf make the Ross Sea a truly once in a lifetime experience.
ICEBREAKER JOURNEYS
The awesome power of an icebreaker is ideal for the dense pack ice that characterises the Ross Sea, as she crushes her way through the otherwise impenetrable frozen vistas. Icebreaker journeys are the ultimate in polar voyaging, allowing access to the most remote and least explored areas of both the Arctic and Antarctic and with only a few such passenger ships in existence these are truly sought-after journeys. Book early!
The icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, features in our collection of Antarctic voyages. Please be aware that due to the high demands made of this icebreaker for scientific and commercial purposes as well as tourism, departures are limited and routes are likely to vary from season to season.
Adventure Cruises
This most elusive and historic region can be reached on our epic voyage that semi-circumnavigates the continent.

Show Me More»Personally, in my humble opinion, anyone who goes to Antarctica is mad if they don't go to South Georgia... it must be one of the most stunning places on the planet.
