Northern Territory

Kings Canyon © Tourism Australia

Home to the most evocative and instantly recognisable of Australia’s landmarks, the Northern Territory has more to offer than the majestic Uluru (Ayers Rock) alone. The rust-red outback stretches as far as the eye can see and is home to a wealth of Aboriginal culture, endemic wildlife and unique geology. The Top End is known for its tropical weather, rich indigenous culture, national parks and laid-back lifestyle.

From the immense rocks of the Red Centre to the wildlife and natural wonders of the Top End, this is where you will find the quintessential Australian experience. And one of the best ways to explore this vast and often inhospitable territory is by rail – a 24 hour journey on The Ghan from Alice Springs to Darwin (or vice versa) will allow you to enjoy the desert in comfort, and there is even time available to explore Katherine Gorge en route.

Uluru (Ayers Rock)
Discover the striking landscapes and Aboriginal history of the Red Centre. The area around Australia’s most instantly-recognisable natural landmark, Uluru, offers more to discover by way of Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and a range of indigenous cultural experiences.

Alice Springs
Nestling in the MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs is surrounded by refreshing waterholes and a surprising amount of greenery – palm trees, gum trees – incredible wildlife and of course the vivid red landscapes, deep gorges and endless desert for which central Australia is renowned. Here you can also learn more about the area’s remote Aboriginal communities and pioneering history.

Darwin and the Top End
Darwin is the main gateway for the region, a multi-cultural city famed for its markets and natural harbour, and the perfect base from which to explore the natural treasures of World Heritage-listed Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of Aboriginal rock art sites in the world, whilst further south the Katherine Region and Nitmiluk National Park offer a vast network of rivers, escarpments and gorges.
