Introduction
Australia’s revered Antarctic explorer, Douglas Mawson, made the first ascent of Mount Erebus in March 1908, as a member of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod Expedition. With two companions, Mawson was the first to reach the South Magnetic Pole. Between 1911 and 1914, Mawson led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. The tragic events that occurred made Mawson a household name in Australia, and earned him an international reputation that rivaled that of his former boss. This expedition, the Kapitan Khlebnikov’s final voyage in Antarctica, pays tribute to Mawson and marks the 100th anniversary of that extraordinary expedition.
Your voyage will be under the expert command of Captain Petr Golikov, who was Master of Kapitan Khlebnikov from 1992 to 2004. He was in command when the vessel performed the first passenger voyage and landing on Antarctica’s Phantom Coast. Captain Golikov is the only Master of a passenger vessel to have circumnavigated the Antarctic continent - not once, but twice!
