Introduction
This 3-night package focuses on making the most of the night sky, with in-depth information provided on the aurora borealis as well as the constellations that can be seen from Fort McMurray. Local astronomy experts will be on hand in the specially-designed night-sky viewing centre to answer questions and to provide photography instruction. During the days your time is at leisure to relax or to enjoy your choice of optional excursions.
Fort McMurray is situated 450 km north of Edmonton and lies between two major river systems: the Clearwater and Athabasca Rivers. The area is home to the largest oil deposit in the world, known as the Athabasca Oil Sands, as well as being surrounded by some spectacular northern wilderness.
Based upon information compiled by Environment Canada over the past 50 years, Fort McMurray has more clear nights between September and April than any other present Aurora-watching destination in Canada. Clear skies are essential for seeing the aurora borealis. Guests have a 90%-plus success rate in seeing aurora activity in Fort McMurray over a 3-night viewing period.
