Itinerary
Day 1 On arrival in St John's, Newfoundland, you will be met at the airport before enjoying a guided orientation around the city. An evening slideshow will prepare you for the trip ahead.
Day 2 This morning’s boat trip will include whale watching, North America's largest puffin colony and tens of thousands of other seabirds. Humpback whales and other species are frequently spotted and the islands visited are one of the planet's largest seabird reserves. After a hearty lunch explore one of the New World's earliest fishing villages.
Day 3 Today is full of wildlife highlights as you circle the Avalon Wilderness Area. Here you may see whales, caribou, puffins, terns and seals – you may even see whales lunge-feeding on the beach. Continue to St Brides for an overnight stay.
Day 4 The morning starts with a visit to the continent's third largest gannet colony. This site is also a breeding ground for thousands of other seabirds including thick billed murres and kittiwakes. In season (mid-July) you can enjoy some of the world's finest land-based whale watching from the high sea cliffs. This afternoon visit the first outpost of New France before continuing to the Terra Nova National Park area. Tonight or tomorrow night usually features a moose and black bear hunt (with cameras only!).
Day 5 Examine Newfoundland's marine ecology with a morning boat trip – you may encounter whales, bald eagles and icebergs - giant chunks of 15,000 year old Greenland glaciers. Spend the remainder of the day on Terra Nova's walking trails, experiencing what makes this area so special — moose, osprey, orchids, shore-birds, song birds, and much more.
Day 6 Explore the lighthouses, history, wildlife, and coastlines of Bonavista and Trinity Bays. This flexible day will be catered to suit the group’s specific interests; bird watching, icebergs, flower walks, beachcombing, sea kayaking, whale watching, and hands-on marine biology programs are all possibilities. This evening return to St John’s.
Day 7 A visit to North America’s most easterly point and a final ocean cruise in search of whales and wildlife provide a fitting end to your expedition.
Day 8 Today you will be transferred to St John’s airport for your flight home.
