Set within the vast fell area of Saariselka, 300km north of the Arctic Circle, Kakslauttanen is just a 30-minute transfer from Ivalo airport. Being a mere 80km from the Russian border, Kakslauttanen rarely suffers from a lack of sparkling white snow, meaning an array of optional activities are on offer. Choose from husky, reindeer and snowmobile safaris and more! This wonderful holiday also comes with a wide choice of accommodation, many including a private sauna - a warm and relaxing end to a fun day out in the snow.
Log Cabins
There are 40 authentic log cabins dotted amongst the trees, sleeping two to five, the different options depending on the size of your party. They all have their own sauna, open fire and cosy sitting area. There is a traditional Finnish house which sleeps two, in surroundings that evoke a feeling of a by-gone era and the Honeymoon Cabin is built from traditional turf, and you don't need to be on honeymoon to book it! The Queen Suite is the ultimate - open plan with a 4-poster bed, roll top bath, rain shower, sauna and private outdoor hot tub.
Snow Rooms
For late December departures onwards, you may wish to opt for a night in a Snow Room. With one large ice bed (with reindeer skins and thermal sleeping bags provided), Snow Rooms are suitable for a maximum of four. Facilities are in a separate heated building nearby.
Glass Igloos
The striking Glass Igloos, built in the traditional dome shape, provide an uninterrupted view of the skies and make you feel like you are sleeping under the stars. If you are really lucky you can lie in bed at night and marvel at the aurora borealis above. They sleep a maximum of two adults and one child, are heated with a WC and basin, with showers in a separate building.
In the main reception building there is a lovely 3-tiered restaurant with an open fire. Guests stay here on a set menu half board basis and an à la carte menu is available at a supplement. There is a Piano Bar and light snacks are available for purchase from the main reception.
The ski resort of Saariselka is just 10 minutes by Ski Bus - this small town offers several shopping and dining options, a great spa and an indoor swimming lagoon, ideal perhaps for an afternoon with the kids.
In the darkest months, December and January, the days may be short, averaging 5 hours. The sun does not rise above the horizon, but the lingering sunrise and sunset provides an enchanting polar light, great for photography. And by night, the stars and the moonlight provide their own magic and although sightings cannot be guaranteed, the magnificent northern lights could make an appearance, even as late as April.
