Introduction
Who for? Those looking for an authentic slice of Greenlandic life.
At this time of year, the midnight sun still casts its golden light over the glaciers and icebergs of Greenland, and everything else here for that matter! Following a connection from Reykjavik, spend your first night in Ilulissat – ‘Town of the Giant Icebergs’ and home to the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord and Disko Bay. Greenland’s third largest town is worth exploring too – try the guided walking tour and you’ll see that old contrasts brilliantly here with the new. During this trip you’ll also have the chance to experience a slice of Greenlandic life.
This trip should not be confused with a conventional cruise – the MV Sarfaq Ittuk is a comfortable yet functional ship, plying these coastal waters carrying locals visiting family and friends and of course tourists, eager to explore the narrow straights and open waters, keen to observe wildlife (keep a look out for humpback whales) and Greenland’s glorious natural landscapes. Onboard accommodation is in outside cabins. The beautiful, verdant south contrasts spectacularly with the icebergs of Disko Bay and you’ll have two nights in Narsaq to enjoy it.
Narsaq is a typical Greenlandic town with small wooden, brightly painted houses perched on the shores of Narsaq Sund, where surreal shaped icebergs float in the deep blue fjord. Visit the museum near the old harbour or perhaps go hiking on one of the well-trodden trails – just one suggestion is the picturesque walk to the fascinating Viking ruins at Dyrnaes.
Note meal basis - this is bed and breakfast throughout, with the addition of a Welcome dinner on arrival in Greenland. We give a suggested itinerary however additional nights may be added in Reykjavik – please call our office to discuss your travel plans.
