Introduction
To give you an idea of just how remote this region really is, of Greenland’s 56,000 population only 4000 live here – in an area the size of Western Europe! Although an airport has been in operation for 45 years, the small number of tourists has had little impact on the way of life. Here in the village of Kulusuk, husky teams are still a vital part of the daily routine, used both as a means of transport and for hunting expeditions. Harnessed up and keenly padding over fresh snow or tethered outside the brightly painted wooden homes, these intelligent, beautiful and noisy huskies are truly in their element.
Each sledge has its own driver and team of eight to twelve huskies, who must train together for over a year. You’ll pick up some of the secrets of ‘mushing’ from him as you glide silently over the ice and snow. No special skills are needed to take part but a reasonable level of fitness is a must if you are to enjoy this trip to the full. One introductory husky sledge ride and one full day on the sledges are included – further trips can be taken at additional cost.
Spring weather is often clear and crisp and with the long hours of daylight, ideal for sledging. At this time of year, there is still a chance to observe the magical northern lights.
