Introduction
Who for? Potential aurora watchers who like to do it in style!
About a two hour drive from Reykjavik, Hotel Ranga sits in a wonderful rural location under the vast open skies of the beautiful south. With superb uninterrupted 360° skies for miles around, it isn’t surprising that the Ranga is blessed with some truly amazing displays of the northern lights during the months of September to March. Because of this, the hotel's team are passionate about this surreal phenomenon and are eager to share their knowledge with fellow ‘aurora’ watchers, together with Ranga's self-taught in-house 'expert'.
Of course the northern lights can never be guaranteed. As the staff at Hotel Ranga wouldn’t want any of their guests to miss a sighting, if you wish, they will wake you during the night if the display is particularly special (or if you want to ensure you see them, no matter when they put in an appearance!). The outside lights of the hotel will be turned off so as not to interfere with the display therefore maximising its intensity.
During your three nights here you may also have the opportunity to watch a presentation at the hotel about the northern lights in Iceland. As for daytime activities, there are numerous natural wonders virtually on the hotel’s doorstep and even more beyond - your 4WD vehicle will get you there and back comfortably should you experience snow. And there are also plenty of optional excursions (many prebookable - contact our team) on offer in the area.
Hotel Ranga sits near the banks of the East Ranga River, famous for its salmon fishing. The hotel has 52 well-appointed rooms and 8 suites including the World Pavilion with Suites from each continent. The en suite bedrooms are located in two single storey wings either side of the public area. They are very tastefully decorated and include a TV, mini-bar and seating area plus all bathrooms have a bathtub and shower. The hotel has a bar, two meeting rooms and a comfortable lounge. The riverside restaurant is noted for its extensive wine list and first class international gourmet cuisine using local ingredients. There are several naturally heated, outdoor hot tubs for those wishing to brave the elements but with the northern lights overhead, no one notices if it is cold in the refreshing night air!
