Iceland : East Fjords Retreat

Departures: June to August Duration: 7 nights Price: from £974

The ‘Mjoeyri’ cottages, hidden in the East Fjords, are a perfect hideaway for couples, families or a small group of friends. Perched on a secluded spit of land on the outskirts of the charming village of Eskifjordur, they are surrounded by misty fjords, craggy mountains and long green valleys. A wide variety of activities and attractions are offered either on your doorstep or can easily explored on a day trip from Mjoeyri! The area is a geologist’s dream, and is where the rare Icelandic feldspar crystal is found.

Itinerary

Outline Itinerary
780 km (approx)

Day 1 Reykjavik fly from the UK to Keflavik and transfer to Reykjavik for an overnight stay at Hotel Reykjavik Centrum.

Day 2 Reykjavik-Egilsstadir-Eskifjordur take a short taxi ride (payable locally) to Reykjavik City Airport for the one hour flight east to Egilsstadir. Pick up rental vehicle from the airport and drive to Eskifjordur, approx. 40 mins by car. Check-in for a five night stay.

Day 3 Eskifjordur the next few days are at leisure for optional activities* around the settlement of Fjardabyggd (all are booked and payable locally). Perhaps hire a little boat and some fishing rods; or beginners and experienced riders alike can take to the saddle at nearby Neskaupstadur, where there is also a little pottery studio and shop.

Day 4 Eskifjordur lovely drives in this region include the coastal route to Djupivogur, or take an elevated route from Egilsstadir and drop down into Seydisfjordur, with its colourful Scandinavian houses.

Day 5 Eskifjordur at Eskifjordur you will find some little charming maritime museums, interspersed with rock and gnome collections, a quirky take on village life past and present! Travel back to the late 1800s at the lovingly restored ‘Randulf’s Seahouse’, where adults can wash down morsels of rotten shark with a slug of Brennivin (a schnapps known as ‘Black Death’)! Dried fish is still made here using with traditional methods.

Day 6 Eskifjordur another daytrip (in summer) by car could be to Lake Myvatn, in Northeast Iceland. Marvel at the bubbling mudpools of Namarskard; a very active geothermal area, see pseudocraters, lava pillars and a myriad of birdlife around the lake.

Day 7 Eskifjordur-Egilsstadir-Reykjavik return rental vehicle to Egilsstadir airport, for the flight back to Reykjavik (alternatively, for visitors during the summer, you may wish to spend a few days driving along the south coast to Reykjavik – contact us for details and a tailormade quotation). Upon arrival at Reykjavik City Airport, take a short taxi ride (payable locally) to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 8 depart Keflavik transfer to Keflavik for return flight to the UK.
