Iceland : Kjolurs - Between the Glaciers

Departures: June - August Duration: 8 nights Price: from £1,456

When it comes to experiencing the Icelandic horse in its native surroundings, few trails are more evocative of the past and how it used to be than riding along Kjolur. This is after all, the route taken by the early settlers as they travelled from the north to the parliament held each summer at Thingvellir in the south. This famous site, now a National Park, is famed for both its beauty and position right on top of the Mid Atlantic ridge, where the continental plates drift apart. Experienced Riders 4-8 hrs/day in the saddle.

Itinerary

Day 1 transfer from Keflavík Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavík. Attend a welcome meeting and enjoy traditional Icelandic soup.

Day 2 drive to Kjóastaðir Farm, visiting the historical site Thingvellir and the well-known Geysir Hot Spring Area on the way. The ride starts off towards the majestic glacier Langjökull and onto Haukadalsheiði heath. You leave the horses for the night and on the way back to Kjóastaðir Farm stop at the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall. The night is spend in several summer houses in rooms which share a bathroom unit.

Day 3 the ride continues along the slopes of Mt. Bláfell. This area was roamed by outlaws in the old days. To be on the safe side you might want to take a little stone along today as a special token for safety during the ride! You might need it later today... Cross the river and enjoy the view to a glacier fed lake with its floating icebergs. Tonight you stay at Árbúðir right on the river bank.

Day 4 you ride along the glacier fed river through huge rugged lava fields that the sure footed Icelandic horses master with such bravery. During the ride enjoy splendid views of the glacier Langjökull. You leave the herd for a couple of hours to enter into the world of Thjófadalir, or Valley of Thieves, a grassy valley surrounded by high mountains, a true oasis in the wilderness. On to a unique geothermal area between glaciers. A natural hot pool invites you to have a well-deserved relaxing bath.

Day 5 this day will be a very special one as you cross large glacial rivers on the way North. No need to worry, most Icelanders would rather choose a trusted Icelandic horse than a vehicle to cross a river! The location of tonight's mountain cabin offers great views of the big glaciers behind you and the high mountains of the North ahead of you. Up to mid-July the sun hardly sets in this part of the country.

Day 6 today it is easy to see that the trail follows a historical route, since large man-made stone cones accompany you through a desert of sand and stones. All the way back to the early settlement of Iceland, people travelled on horseback on exactly the same trails as today. Imagine being part of a chieftains family, all dressed up and riding the best horses on this historical route. From the mountain cabin you overlook a large man-made lake. In August this is a perfect spot for berry picking!

Day 7 the ride descends past a beautiful lake towards a fertile valley in the Skagafjörður area. Enjoy endless herds of horses grazing on striking hills. In good weather conditions you can see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean at the North coast. Good riding tracks give you the opportunity to enjoy a fast ride in the soft tölt! The day ends at Lauftún Holiday Farm with a hot pot heated with geothermal water.

Day 8 transfer back to Reykjavík for the last overnight stay. Approx. return to Reykjavík at 14:00.

Day 9 transfer by bus to Keflavík Airport in time for the return flight home.
