Iceland : Northern Lights at Glymur

Departures: September - April Duration: 3 nights Price: from £319

This 3-night self-drive short break is based at Hotel Glymur in the West; one of the country's few boutique properties, and a great place from which to view the aurora borealis due to its remote location away from light pollution, whilst being just a 45 minute drive from Reykjavik. The property occupies an incredibly picturesque spot overlooking Hvalfjordur ('Whale Fjord') and close by to the cascading Glymur waterfall.

Introduction

Who for? Those looking for a very special countryside break staying close to Reykjavik where they can see the northern lights!

Iceland is situated in the middle of the 'auroral oval' - far enough north (but not too far) to make witnessing a show of the northern lights a real possibility.

Just a 45 minute drive from Reykjavik and around a 90 minute drive from Keflavik International Airport, charming Hotel Glymur sits overlooking 'Whale Fjord' (Hvalfjordur) in a peaceful and stunning location. This is a great spot for those looking for what we consider to be one of Iceland's top hotels, with good chances of seeing the aurora borealis (from late September through to early April).

Naturally, the northern lights cannot be guaranteed, but by staying in the countryside away from light pollution, a winter-time stay at Hotel Glymur offers very good chances should skies be clear. And if the lights make an appearance late during the night, the fantastic team at Hotel Glymur will give you a wake up call, should you wish!

Hotel Glymur is also a great location should you wish to explore West Iceland and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and your 4WD vehicle offers comfort as well as peace of mind should you experience snow. Close by are the lava waterfalls of Hraunfossar, as well as Iceland's largest hotspring area, historic Reykholt and the fascinating Settlement Centre exhibition at Borganes

The hotel has a 22 well-appointed rooms as well as executive suites and a selection of villas. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, with many thoughtful and personal touches reflected in the decor, with Italian leather furniture and unique art pieces. Every room has a magnificent view either overlooking the fjord or the mountains. Hotel Glymur offers creative and mouthwatering cuisine from their gourmet restaurant, and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail at their bar.  The hotel also boasts outdoor hot tubs which are a unique spot from which to keep watch for the northern lights!
