Iceland : Sheep Round-Up

Day 1 transfer from Keflavík Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavík. Attend an evening welcome meeting including a light supper of traditional Icelandic soup.

Day 2 drive from Reykjavík via Thingvellir Nationalpark, Geysir hot springs and Gullfoss Waterfall to Fossnes Farm, situated in beautiful surroundings. Here you meet the horses and staff members. After an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits the ride starts along pleasant trails and colourful Gnúpverja­hreppur countryside. Enjoy the view of deep green mountains, valleys and the mighty glacial river Thjórsá. Relax in a hot tub before a hearty dinner at the farm.

Day 3 ride into the mountains and fields of black ashes, the result of numerous eruptions of volcano Mt. Hekla. At a mountain cabin meet the farmers who have been riding in the mountains for some days already to gather the sheep. Leave the horses and drive back to Fossnes for an overnight stay and relax in the outdoor hot tub.

Days 4-5 during the days join the farmers, riding along and helping them with their flocks. You will also visit some of the interesting sights in the area. After participating in the round up, help the farmers sort their livestock and join in their singing, celebrating the successful ride into the mountains.

Optional (not included in the tour price): Dance at the community centre, celebrating the completion of a successful round up.

Day 6 it's time to say goodbye to your hosts and horses. On the way back to Reykjavík drive the scenic road along the south coast and visit the well known spa Blue Lagoon (entrance fee not included). Arrive back in Reykjavik at approx 15:00.

Day 7 transfer to Keflavík Airport in time for the return flight home.
