Iceland : Snaefellsnes - Magic & Mystery

Departures: June - August Duration: 8 nights Price: from £1,439

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula on Iceland’s west coast is an area of striking beauty and is in many ways a microcosm of the country as a whole with fjords, volcanoes and an ice cap. Indeed the glacier covered volcano Snaefellsjokull after which the peninsula is named, is one of the most characteristic sights in Iceland. Experienced Riders 5-7 hrs / day in saddle.

Itinerary

Day 1 transfer from Keflavik Airport to a guesthouse in Reykjavik. Attend a welcome meeting and enjoy traditional Icelandic soup.

Day 2 transfer to Stori-Kalfalaekur Farm. After an introduction to the unique traits of the Icelandic horse ride into the mountains through fertile farmlands and along good riding tracks to Grimsstadir Farm with its proud history dating back to medieval times. Two nights at Stori-Kalfalaekur which has a hot tub on site. (5 - 6 hours)

Day 3 enjoy a ride through multi-coloured mountains and along low bushy hillsides. Hitardalur is a geological paradise. Vast lava fields, soft tracks through ashes and the high palagonite (tuff) mountains give you the impression of taking a ride on the moon! Leave the horses and drive back to Stori-Kalfalaekur. (5 - 6 hours)

Day 4 continue through this mystical volcanic valley, stopping at Hitardalsrett where you might see the troll woman Hit, who was turned into stone returning late from a date. Proceed west across Hitara River and travel through an area well known as the hideout of Iceland’s most famous outlaw, Grettir. Leave the horses and spend the night at Laugagerdi School with its own geothermally heated swimming pool. (7 - 8 hours)

Day 5 rejoin your mount and follow the beach along a famous trail on the shores of the Snaefellsnes in view of majestic Snaefellsjokull. The horses spend the night at a farm while you continue to Hof Farm. (6 - 7 hours)

Optional Excursion (available at an extra charge): drive along the coast towards the romantic fishing villages of Arnastapi and Hellnar. Visit the Information Centre of the Snaefellsnes National Park and learn about its mysterious powers. View beautiful bird cliffs along the shore, shaped by powerful waves.

Day 6 enjoy another beach ride changing direction back towards the mighty Eldborgarhraun lava field. This is a unique experience as the trail cuts between lava fields and mountains on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Leave the horses and return to Stori-Kálfalaekur for 2-nights. (6 – 7 hours)

Day 7 ride along black sand as the trail follows the outline of Eldborgarhraun lava field. The ride concludes back at the farm, where you enjoy a farewell dinner. (5 – 6 hours)

Day 8 transfer back to Reykjavik for an overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Day 9 transfer to Keflavik for the return flight to the UK.
