Introduction
Who for? Keen walkers with a good standard of fitness (walks are rated 3.55 for challenge level and vary in duration from 1-6 hours).
Travelling in a group of generally between 12-20 people, stay at the friendly family-run Vatnsholt Farm, near Selfoss, on a full board basis in rooms with private facilities. The itinerary will typically involve walking for several hours a day (max of 6-7 hrs), sometimes comprising several short walks in one day.
Enjoy an in-depth look at all the region has to offer, including sightseeing of the Golden Circle, plus a day on the volcanic Westman Islands, where the earth is still warm in spots, and you can see how the eruption of 1973 buried part of the town.
Spend a day walking at Thorsmork, which was affected by the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in May 2010; this is a fascinating and beautiful area, where three glaciers spill down into the valley. Take in the waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss, and the natural rock arch in the headland at Dyrholaey.
One of the itinerary’s highlights is a glacier hike on the Solheimajokull – learn how to use basic equipment such as crampons and ice axes in a fantastic excursion onto the ice.
Hike the wonderful coloured rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar and bathe in a naturally-heated river. The tour concludes with a visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon, with its warm and relaxing mineral-rich water.
