Outline Itinerary
855 km (approx)
Day 1 fly from the UK to Keflavik and transfer to Reykjavik for an overnight stay at Hotel Cabin.
Day 2 collect rental vehicle this morning and head east over Hellisheidi, past the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi on your way to the Geysir geothermal area. Marvel at spouting geysers, including Strokkur which ejects a 30 metre jet of water into the air every few minutes. Visit nearby Gullfoss, the magnificent two-tiered waterfall and historic Skalholt with its lovely church. Continue past the glaciers to the hotel and check in for a 2 night stay at the quaint Country Hotel Anna. Close by is mighty Skogafoss – at 60 metres high it is one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls; and for good reason!
Day 3 drive to the basalt columns and surf pounded beach at Reynishverfi or enjoy great views from the cliffs at Dyrholaey, with its natural rock arch. Weather permitting take a long drive eastwards to Skaftafell, now part of the Vatnajokull National Park, set amidst spectacular glacier tongues. Enjoy the scenic drive and possibly take a short walk inland to enchanting Svartifoss or the snout of the glacier before heading back to Skogar. Optional adventure activities are available on the glaciers in this area, including snowmobiling and iceclimbing (please contact our team to prebook).
Day 4 visit the fascinating little museum at Skogar and the elegant falls of Seljalandsfoss. Then on your return journey to Reykjavik stop at the pretty fishing village of Eyrarbakki. We recommend a visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon (entrance fee additional cost - prepayable), before an overnight in Iceland’s capital at Hotel Cabin.
Day 5 return the rental vehicle in the morning (rental periods are based on each 24 hr duration; three day's car hire is included in the itinerary), and then transfer to Keflavik for the flight back to the UK.
