Itinerary
Day 1 arrive Auckland transfer by shuttle bus to your city hotel. Time at leisure.
Day 2 Auckland-Bay of Islands (257 km) meet your guide and collect your bike – a Heritage Softail – at the Hyatt Regency Auckland then hit the open road en route to Paihia in the Bay of Islands for a two night stay.
Day 3 explore Northland choose from the following suggestions:
Day trip to Cape Reinga (road will be fully sealed all the way by January 2010)
Day trip to Doubtless Bay and Mongonui (best fish and chip in NZ straight from the sea to your plate!)
Day trip to Hokianga Harbour and Tane Mahuta Kauri Tree
Highly recommended is a boat trip around the Bay of Islands – full day, half day or 2 hour speedboat options available.
Day 4 Bay of Islands-Waiuku (290 km) ride to Waiuku, 40 minutes south of Auckland for an overnight stay.
Day 5 Waiuku-Waihi (183 km) head east then follow the coastline before riding through the southern Coromandel to Waihi for a two night stay.
Day 6 explore the Coromandel choose from the following suggestions:
Day Ride around Coromandel Loop (day tour of stunning scenery) – MUST DO!
Day Ride to Whakatane
Day Ride to Rotorua and visit the geothermal parks
Alternatively take a Gold Mine Tour in Waihi, visit Hot Water Beach, soak at Lost Springs Hot Pools, walk along Karangahake Gorge or hop on Driving Creek Railway
Day 7 Waihi-Taupo (196-225km) with the option to detour via Rotorua, ride south into the heart of the North Island and Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. Stay for 2 nights.
Day 8 explore the Central Plateau choose from the following suggestions:
Day ride to glow worm caves at Waitomo
Day ride to the art deco town on Napier in Hawkes Bay
Day ride around Lake Taupo
Day ride through volcanic Tongariro National Park
Day ride to Rotorua
Alternatively see stunning Huka Falls and Aritata Dam near to Taupo or opt for one of the many activities available such as boat fishing, geothermal park tours, helicopter tours, river trips.
Day 9 Taupo-Wellington (372 km) enjoy a ride into Wellington, the nation’s capital located on a natural harbour, for a two night stay.
Day 10 around Wellington choose from the following suggestions:
Day ride to Martinborough over the Rimataka Hills to wine country
Day ride up the Kapiti Coast
Alternatively explore the city enjoying the culture and museums or simply relax and enjoy the cafes, bars and restaurants
Day 11 Wellington-Picton-Nelson (110 km) cross the Cook Strait by ferry to picturesque Picton and ride the meandering road along Queen Charlotte Sound to Nelson for a two night stay.
Day 12 around Nelson choose from the following suggestions:
Day ride in Queen Charlotte Sound
Day ride to Abel Tasman National Park - RECOMMENDED
Day ride to wine growing region of Blenheim
Alternatively discover Nelson offering plenty to see and do for a day off the bike.
Day 13 Nelson-Westport (223 km) ride through the Buller Gorge to the rugged West Coast for an overnight stay just outside of Westport.
Day 14 Westport-Hokitika (110-195 km) head south to Hokitika for an overnight stay visiting the Punakaiki Rocks en route. It is possible to extend the ride inland along the Reefton Road, but you miss pancake rocks of Punakaiki – worth a visit.
Day 15 Hokitika-Fox Glacier (158 km) continue down the West Coast to Fox Glacier for two nights. One of the main highlights of New Zealand, explore the glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier on one of the many tours available on foot, by plane or helicopter.
Day 16 West Coast glaciers enjoy a day at leisure.
Day 17 Fox Glacier-Cardrona (286 km) ride along the highest sealed road in New Zealand to Cardrona for an overnight stay.
Day 18 Cardrona-Queenstown (40 km) travel the short distance to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand.
Day 19 explore the Southern Lakes choose from the following suggestions:
Day trip to Milford Sound (by coach or aeroplane, takes 2 days by Harley)
Day rides in the Lindis Pass
Day ride to Invercargill (Burt Monroe Museum)
Day ride through Wanaka/Cromwell/Alexandra and Kawerau Gorge
Alternatively explore Queenstown itself with the multitude of activities on offer - dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, winery tours, Shotover Jet, to name a few...
If you wish to do Milford Sound by Harley Davidson you will only be able to have 1 night in Queenstown to fit this in hence our recommend to do by air or coach.
Day 20 Queenstown-Lake Tekapo (257 km) ride through the mountainous heart of the South Island to the beautiful Lake Tekapo for an overnight stay. In the afternoon you may like to take a ride up to Mount Cook Village, visit the Spa and Thermal Pools or explore the shores of the lake including visiting the Church of the Good Shepherd.
Day 21 Lake Tekapo-Christchurch (225 km) cross the vast Canterbury Plains to the 'Garden City' of Christchurch for a two night stay.
Day 22 explore around Christchurch choose from the following suggestions:
Day ride to Kaikoura for whale watching – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (weather dependent)
Day ride around the Akaroa Peninsula
Day ride out across the Canterbury Plains
Day ride to Hanmer Springs and soak in the hot pools
Alternatively, simply explore the charming city of Christchurch.
