New Zealand : Otago Central Rail Trail Classic

Departures: November to April Duration: 4 nights Price: from £682

Step back in time and experience New Zealand’s rural past on this cycling delight. Travel through historic and scenic countryside on cycle trails based on disused railway lines. Ride along canals, quiet coastal roads, scenic river gorges and rolling countryside. Meet the locals and try your hand at the old sport of curling. And to give your legs a rest a ride on the spectacular Taieri railway is included.

Introduction

Four days are spent cycling the historic Otago Central Rail Trail, following the old Maniototo rail line from Clyde to Middlemarch. Originally constructed to transport supplies to and from the goldrush, the Otago Central Railway was started near Dunedin in 1879 and reached Middlemarch in 1891. The stretch that is now the Otago Central Rail Trail from Clyde to Middlemarch took another 16 years before it's completion in 1907, not surprising as it has 97 bridges and 13 tunnels! By 1994 the railway was used infrequently so it was redeveloped as a trail for cyclists, walkers and horse riders. The track was re-gravelled and 68 bridges were re-decked.

As to be expected in New Zealand the scenery is magnificent. Ride along the stunning Tekapo canals with spectacular views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps, cycle the quiet coastal road from Dunedin to the historic quarter of Oamaru, flanked by farms on one side and the ocean on the other.

As well as enjoying the cycling, this trip is also about exploring the many small towns and abandoned gold diggings along the way, meeting the locals and trying your hand at the ancient art of curling (bowls on ice). A two hour train ride on the spectacular Taieri railway is also included through breathtaking gorges, viaducts, bridges and tunnels.

Departing from Christchurch or Clyde and finishing back in Christchurch or Dunedin, the tour has a support van with a supply of water, fresh fruit and snacks. Hearty meals are all part of the enjoyment stopping at friendly restaurants and local cafes en route. Accommodation is in historic pubs, hotels and even an old school house!
