Itinerary
Day 1 Picton-Furneaux Lodge (approx 5-6 hours walk)
Board a boat at Picton and travel through the sound to Motuara Island, with opportunities to spot dolphins along the way. This sanctuary is predator-free and native birds like the South Island Robin and South Island Saddleback can be seen on this island sanctuary. Back on the boat, continue to Ship Cove, for the start of the walk. Climb to a ridge for some great views before the descent to Endeavour Inlet. Overnight at Furneaux Lodge in twin share Studio Suites. Dinner will be served in the restaurant with a glass of wine.
After a leisurely breakfast, walk up to the waterfall, which is surrounded by luxuriant forest. Then join the main track as it winds around Endeavour Inlet through forests that are alive with birdsong. Stay overnight at Punga Cove Resort, with the luxury of private facilities in the chalets. Dinner will be served in the restaurant with a glass of wine.
Day 3 Punga Cove-Portage Hotel (approx 8 hours walk)
Leaving Punga Cove, climb to the ridge, which divides Queen Charlotte and Keneperu Sounds. Enjoy spectacular views throughout the day walking along an undulating ridge, which is the most challenging section of the trek – for those who prefer, you can opt for a water taxi today instead. Stay overnight at Portage Hotel, where you can relax in a spa bath. You will be staying in twin share Hillside suites, and dinner will be served in the restaurant with a glass of wine.
Day 4 Portage Hotel-Anakiwa (approx 7 hours walk)
Climb to the ridgeline track for yet more wonderful views. After Mistletoe Bay, the track contours along the hill to drop down into Davies Bay. The last 30 minutes of the walk are through mature beech forest to the end of the trek at Anakiwa, where transport will be waiting to take you back to Picton. Arriving in Picton around 4.30pm you can enjoy a farewell get together at our base with a relaxing drink and reminisce over the magic of the last four days.
ACCOMMODATION DURING TREK
During the trek you stay in lodges with towel, bed linen, duvets and pillows provided. The lodges offer very comfortable accommodation with hot showers, flushing toilets, a lounge and dining area.
