Sweden : Discovering Skane

Skane province is generally associated with endless open fields and wide, flat horizons. Though this image is true in some parts of Skane, particularly the south east, the region as a whole has a much more diverse and varied landscape together with intriguing historic sites and charming cities.

The cosmopolitan city of Malmo has undergone a fascinating transformation over the past decade and 'reclaimed' the seafront, where new districts full of interesting architecture and bustling street life juxtapose the ancient buildings of the medieval city. The old university town of Lund has a bohemian, laid-back eccentricity like Oxford, with which it is often compared.

Historic sites abound – impressive castles and manor houses, Viking monuments and fortresses. Foteviken Viking Museum is a fascinating working Viking-style village which is virtually self-sufficient. Everyone dresses in home-spun garments and simply crafted footwear made from leather which they cure themselves. Kilns and clay ovens are dotted around the village for baking bread and firing the bowls from which the villagers eat. It is a surprisingly authentic village, with an atmosphere of a hippy commune in a time warp!

Following a circular route around Skane you'll also take in the towns of Ystad and Kristianstad as well as exploring the coastal highlights of the Kullaberg Peninsula.
