Mystery and wonder shroud the northern lights, otherwise known as the aurora borealis, for they do not conform to a pattern nor perform on demand. They can be fleeting and faint or elongated and bright. They can be pink, white, blue or most commonly green. They appear in many forms - perhaps as slithers of light arcing across the sky, pulsating waves or billowing curtains of colour filling the darkness. The solar activity, which causes the northern lights, peaks every 11 years, so the aurora borealis tends to be more frequent and intense at these times. Additionally, the years following a peak see increased northern lights activity. We are now reaching the peak and this winter and next are expected to be very active and exciting indeed.
The Mountain Station is regarded as one of the best locations in the world from where to observe the northern lights, due to the clear air here and virtually cloud-free skies. A natural occurrence in the behaviour of the prevailing winds in the area means that cloud rarely forms, creating ideal conditions for auroral appearances. This anomaly in cloud formation makes Abisko one of the driest places in Sweden, even though it is close to some of the country's top ski resorts which are the amongst the wettest!
The Abisko Mountain Station is located in the beautiful Abisko National Park, overlooking Lake Tornetrask, a convenient walking distance from Abisko Canyon and the chairlift up to the Aurora Sky Station. The Mountain Station is the only hotel within the national park and is not to be mistaken for the Abisko Mountain Lodge, set in Abisko village. At the Abisko Mountain Station you can enjoy peace and quiet and more importantly no light pollution to hinder your northern lights viewing. The dramatic and unique views over the Lake Tornetrask and the surrounding mountains are the perfect stage for the light show above. The Aurora Sky Station at the summit offers unique and excellent northern lights viewing from a large outside deck area, and inside you can relax and warm up by a log fire at the inviting cafe/restaurant. And obviously, with such expanses of sky here and spectacular auroral appearances, the lights can be enjoyed from ground level too - from the scenic surrounds of the Mountain Station as well as from its cosy lounge areas which offer giant picture windows overlooking the lake - even the restaurant and bar have panoramic views.
This exciting trip includes one night at the Abisko Mountain Station and includes an excursion to the Aurora Sky Station by chairlift where you can peruse an aurora exhibition, relax in the cosy café and hopefully observe the northern lights for yourself. The accommodation is basic, yet comfortable, though the anticipation of viewing the northern lights more than makes up for the simple facilities.
From a natural phenomenon to a man-made one - the following 2 nights are spent at the ICEHOTEL including one night in a Snow Room. Choose from a host of optional activities, relax in the Icebar and hopefully enjoy further displays of the spectacular aurora borealis.
