Sweden : Ski Bjorkliden

Departures: December to May Duration: 3 nights Price: from £623

This is a resort with a definite lean towards 'family-friendly' skiing although if you arrive without younglings in tow, you won't be disappointed. Great off-piste opportunities present challenges all of their own. Bjorkliden is a relatively quiet ski resort but with plenty of snow until May.

Introduction

Bjorkliden can be found deep within the Arctic Circle just north of Sweden’s Abisko National Park, almost on the border with Norway. It has been a well-kept Swedish secret for over 100 years but its many facets are beginning to attract people from all over Europe. Compared to its Alpine cousins, people come here for the natural attractions rather than the après ski scene and as numbers are relatively small, there are hardly ever any queues for the ski lifts! It has 23 runs for varying abilities (the longest at 3km) and Sweden’s third highest run (with a 538m drop).

Being so far north means excellent chances of witnessing the northern lights over Bjorkliden around the start of the main season, which runs from February to the middle of May. It boasts on average 1.5m of perfect snow and enjoys extra long days as the season progresses. The resort actually comes to life in December when a limited number of the smaller slopes open. This ‘pre-season’ time is great for beginners and those wishing to combine skiing with other winter activities, or perhaps a visit to the ICEHOTEL.

Bjorkliden is surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views on all sides and includes those of frozen Lake Tornetrask and the famous Lapporten ‘gap’ between two mighty mountains. This spectacular natural ‘U’ shaped gap is known as a gateway to Lapland, used for centuries as a landmark by the Sami as their wandering herds of reindeer move between summer and winter grazing lands. This vast expanse of countryside blanketed in pristine snow creates a true winter wonderland.

We offer 3 and 4-night skiing trips throughout the season as well as a special New Year departure. Longer trips also available on scheduled flights via Stockholm.
