About Spitsbergen
A Norwegian island and the largest in the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergen lies far within the Arctic Circle, where most the year is spent either in 24 hour daylight or 24 hour darkness! The long summer days make for fantastic opportunity to enjoy this stunning destination.
Quite simply, Spitsbergen is spectacular. The nine main islands are a mixture of wild and rugged mountains, glaciers, vast icecaps, endless open tundra and, along the north and west, beautiful fjord indented coastlines. Drift ice or shimmering icebergs floating in impossibly dark blue/green waters provide superb photo opportunities, and it isn’t difficult to discover why the lure of the landscape here is irresistible.
The chances of polar bear sightings are good (though can never be guaranteed), and you also get the chance to marvel at a plethora of marine and bird life, from walrus, dolphin and orca to over 100 different species of bird!
