This November there's an extra special reason to visit the Southern Hemisphere - the largest partial solar eclipse of the year will take place on 25 November 2011, much of it over the Antarctic continent. A thrilling natural occurance to witness, a partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth partially obscuring the sun. |

November's partial eclipse will be visible from Antarctica, Tasmania (Australia) and most of New Zealand. For your best chance of seeing this event, consider a voyage to Antarctica - the Akademik Ioffe will be sailing between the Falkland Islands and South Georgia on 25 November and, subject to conditions, it may be possible to see the partial eclipse from the ship. |

Alternatively, our Classic Antarctica voyages on board the Clipper Adventurer, MS Expedition and Antarctic Dream will be exploring the Antarctic Peninsula at this time, with a chance to see the sun rising under partial eclipse. As much as 75% of the sun will be obscured in this region as the sun rises over the horizon. |

With a self-drive holiday in Tasmania you can explore independently and pick your spot for viewing the partial eclipse, shortly before sunset. Only 6% of the sun will be covered here, but combine this with some unique wildlife experiences and awe-inspiring scenery and Tasmania can't fail to impress. And just a couple of weeks later on 10 December a total lunar eclipse will take place over Australia! | |

Over in New Zealand the best places to witness this event are undoubtedly the Mt John Observatory, located near spectacular Lake Tekapo, the city of Dunedin and the town of Oamaru in South Island, and the Carter Observatory in Wellington in North Island. Our New Zealand holidays can be tailor-made to visit any of these places. Visible from most of of the country, the sun will set whilst partially eclipsed. |
