Kapitan Khlebnikov - End of an Era

The Kapitan Khlebnikov, the world’s most legendary polar expedition vessel will retire from passenger service in March 2012. |
|
To mark the occasion and signify the 'End of an Era' of extraordinary expedition cruising, a collection of new and remarkable itineraries has been created in both the Arctic and Antarctic for the 2011/12 seasons.
NEW ARCTIC VOYAGES
The Northeast Passage (28 days) »
Greenland’s Final Frontier (21 days) »
The Arctic Passage (23 days) »
Arctic Circumnavigation (66 days) »
NEW ANTARCTIC VOYAGES
Ross Sea Centennial Voyage (29 days) »
East Antarctica Farewell Voyage (31 days) »
In March 2012, the 'KK' as she is affectionately referred will return to escort duty accompanying ships sailing the Northeast Passage. This flagship vessel has garnered more Polar firsts than any other passenger ship. Under the command of Captain Petr Golikov, the Kapitan Khlebnikov circumnavigated the Antarctic continent, twice. The ship was the platform for the first tourism exploration of the Dry Valleys.
The icebreaker has transited the Northwest Passage more than any other expedition ship. Adventurers aboard Khlebnikov were the first commercial travellers to witness a total eclipse of the sun from the isolation of the Davis Sea in Antarctica. In 2004, the special attributes of the Kapitan Khlebnikov made it possible to visit an emperor penguin rookery in the Weddell Sea that had not been visited for 40 years.
Passengers who have travelled aboard this impressive vessel are always full of praise for the experience - awed by the sheer power and often surprised by the comfort.
The Kapitan Khlebnikov's final voyages will allow guests access to the most remote and least explored areas of the Arctic and Antarctic, and with a maximum capacity of only 112 passengers, are truly sought-after journeys.
The new voyages are in addition to the 2010/11 Season voyages aboard the Kapitan Khlebnikov. To see all voyage itineraries, click here »
ULTIMATE EXPLORING
There is nothing quite like experiencing the awesome power of an icebreaker as it forges a brand new course through the frozen oceans of the Polar regions. The ultimate in expedition voyaging, these powerful vessels open up areas that are inaccessible even to the ice-strengthened adventure ships that most Polar voyages utilise.
Onboard helicopters are used throughout the journey, serving as the eyes of the vessel on reconnaissance flights. They are also pivotal in transporting passengers closer to historic sites, giving an unparalleled view of the distinctive wildlife and untouched frozen landscapes. As ice forms and thickens these sturdy icebreakers continue to power ahead, creating unique opportunities – experience the thrill of setting foot on previously untouched pack ice. But perhaps the most awesome experience, reserved for passengers aboard this class of vessel alone, is peering over the bow as the ship powerfully drives her way through solid ice.
COMFORT & POWER
Though unlikely to win any awards for her sleek lines, the work-horse exterior look of the Khlebnikov belies the superior quality of the interior. Furnished to a high standard this vessel offers the broadest range of facilities among our fleet including an indoor swimming pool, exercise room and sauna as well as lounge and bar, auditorium style lecture theatre and two dining rooms. Each cabin has exterior windows and private facilities. So you may be in some of the remotest places on the planet, but you’ll still enjoy all the best home comforts!
