Sweden ICEHOTEL

It is a rather bizarre concept… sleeping on an ice bed in a room chilled to a bracing -5°C, yet such is the mesmerising lure of pure ice and snow that a stay in an ice hotel has become our most popular Lapland winter holiday. Add fine dining, a cosy bed for additional nights and a whole host of activities and you’ll understand why we’re the world’s foremost operator for this type of holiday. THE ICE CHAPEL

The simply stunning chapel is one of the last rooms to be completed, blessed and handed over to the parish of Jukkasjarvi on Christmas Day. During its season, around 150 happy couples exchange vows here and some 30 christenings take place, its sparkling white brilliance symbolising purity and ‘new life.’

Whether here as a couple or joined by family and friends, the uniqueness of the location will stay with you forever and as the chapel itself soon melts away, returning to the River Torne, memories and photographs will be especially cherished.

Again, as with the overall design, no two chapels are the same. There is always however, a separate reindeer-skin doorway which allows the bride to make her appearance without the need to walk through the hotel. Rows of ice ‘pews’ are covered in reindeer skins for the comfort of guests and witnesses and the magnificent crystal clear font takes centre stage in front of a unique piece of ice art or illuminated ice window.

Chances are that while staying at the ICEHOTEL you’ll see a wedding or blessing – people come here from around the globe and as you can imagine, it is becoming more and more popular. Couples can take the traditional approach and dress in a full gown and veil, morning suit or even a kilt (yes, a kilt!) whilst others have a quirkier approach such as matching ski suits!

Of course during the day, there are plenty of opportunities to view the chapel whilst no ceremonies are taking place or if you’d particularly like to sit in, ask politely and quite often the couple will welcome anyone who wishes to share in their happiness (check at reception for details).

ICEHOTEL
WEDDINGS

There is no question that every wedding is special but a wedding here truly takes that statement to the next level. Maybe it is because of the uniqueness of the venue, the majesty of such pure white surroundings and the fact that here you tend to hold your loved one just that little bit closer!

We have put together many tailor-made packages for weddings and blessings at the ICEHOTEL either for just the happy couple or packages for an entire wedding party, often arranging private group activities as well as exclusive hire of the nearby Homestead restaurant.

We work hand in hand with the wedding coordinator and requests, no matter how extravagant, discrete or individual to the couple involved, are taken on board and where possible, subject to cost and feasibility, realised on the day. Typical wedding services are also available – there are hairdressers in Kiruna, a wedding cake may be ordered, flowers and music are possible and of course, an official photographer can record the whole event.

For the bride, the most important aspect for her wedding day has to be her outfit. In the past we’ve had everything from white skisuits with a veil to the full-on traditional gown (with funky snow boots hidden underneath) and often had reports that as long as you have a short jacket or wrap for the ‘in-between’ times, a strapless number works just as well for the photographs – there is so much excitement involved that brides rarely notice the interior temperature of -5°C!

A summary of legal requirements, clothing advice and other helpful hints can be found in our Wedding Dossier which may be requested by post or downloaded here. Our knowledgeable team of consultants will be happy to assist whatever you are considering for your special day.

As a guideline a standard ICEHOTEL wedding package (which should be added to the basic holiday cost) includes return transfers to the Registrar in Kiruna to legalise paperwork; hire of the Ice Chapel; services of a Priest and translator plus a Marriage Certificate – this costs around £1390.
