A safe and comfortable choice

If you are looking for the 5 star luxury of an all inclusive resort hotel, look elsewhere - this is not Iceland. Reykjavik has the best choice of accommodation but what you will find throughout the island are comfortable, unfussy hotels, country guesthouses, hostels and campsites, with friendly and helpful staff. Driving on Iceland's traffic-free roads is safe and infinitely more pleasurable than in many holiday destinations.

Most main roads are hard-surfaced but greater care is needed for driving on gravel. Iceland is safe and largely crime-free. The hazards, if any, are natural, such as hot springs, waterfalls and glaciers. And, contrary to popular myth, Iceland's midges rarely bite!

For everyone.. well almost
You won't find any beach resorts here. But if you are into the outdoors, nature and adventure, if you enjoy touring and walking amidst fabulous scenery then Iceland is for you. The island will fulfil the wildest dreams of hikers, photographers, bird watchers, whale watchers and geologists. But Iceland is by no means only for the young, active and special interest visitor. People of all ages, interests and fitness can enjoy a holiday here, though facilities for disabled visitors are somewhat limited. It is a great place for a family holiday too. A word of warning - Iceland is a highly addictive place and many visitors come back again and again!

Not as expensive as you might think
It is fair to say that Iceland once had a reputation for high prices but thankfully this is largely a thing of the past. Car hire and alcohol drinks are still very costly. Food prices in the shops, as well as eating out, are somewhat more expensive than in the UK. However, visitor attractions and excursions are often fairly priced and public transport and fuel costs are on a par with those of the UK. Goods and services are generally of a high standard and many people remark that Iceland is good value for money. And remember, in Iceland nature comes free!

Nor as cold as its chilly-sounding name
Warmed by the Gulf stream, Iceland has a temperate oceanic climate in spite of its sub-arctic location. Winter temperatures are similar to those of Vienna or Milan, while in summer they are usually in the range 10-16°C/50-60°F (lower in the highlands). The weather is changeable and most visitors can expect a mix of sunny and cloudy days, rain and wind. In winter, snow is likely in the north of Iceland, while in the south, it comes and goes, according to the weather systems current at the time,
