Regional Information

The South East
The region is dominated by Iceland's largest ice mass, 8,300 sq km Vatnajokull. Roughly a dozen valley glaciers spill down from its icy domed plateau to a vast flood plain formed of volcanic debris from successive sub-glacial eruptions. The Grimsvotn volcano erupted in 1996 and dumped for cubic km of melt water and ice on the plain, destroying the road, the power lines and several bridges. The road winds through dramatic scenery along the base of Vatnajokull and makes one of the most scenic drives in Iceland. A side track winds up to the edge of the icecap to Joklasel, the base for thrilling glacier excursions by snowmobile,

Skaftafell & surrounds

A National Park and area of exceptional natural beauty, Skaftafell sits at the foot of Iceland's highest peak, 2119m Oraefajokull. Short and longer walking trails lead through woodland to waterfalls, viewpoints and to the several glacier tongues in the area. Nearby Ingolfshofdi is a rocky headland and bird sanctuary, reached by a fun-filled tractor cart ride over the black sands. A key attraction of the region is Jokulsarlon where icebergs the size of houses break off into a lagoon, formed as a tongue of glacier has retreated. In shades of cobalt blue, jade green and shimmering white, the icebergs can be viewed from the shore or on a thrilling boat trip which weaves among them.

Hofn

The only fishing village in the region and one of the most beautifully located of all towns in Iceland, Hofn (pop. 1,800) is a base for glacier excursions and exploring the surrounding area of colourful mountains and abundant bird life.
