Norwegian Lapland

Lapland’s ‘far north’ – this quieter region offers a very different face. Being largely untouched by tourism, many of the sights are as they’ve been for years. This is where we set some of our more specialised trips.

LOFOTEN
is a stunning archipelago just off the northern Norwegian coast actually just outside of true Norwegian Lapland. The islands are blessed with a diverse and dramatic coastline: narrow straits; tall, glacier-carved peaks; quiet coves; windswept beaches; tiny islets and picturesque harbours. Shoals of herring come here to over winter, bringing orca in great numbers hence the location for our orca safaris. Combine this wonderful wildlife encounter with the ICEHOTEL in Sweden and you have a brilliant 2-centre trip.

NORTH CAPE
Send a postcard from here and it will bear the mark ‘northernmost point in Europe’. This rugged coastal plateau looks out over the Barents Sea 307m below. This is a strange place to visit but nonetheless fascinating. Amongst other things, the Visitor Centre houses a tiny chapel and a super 270° cinema presentation.

KIRKENES
sits way over to the north east, very close to the Russian border. This coastal town of approximately 7,000 inhabitants is surrounded by a mix of rugged coastline, dense forests and open plains. It is the turning port for ships on the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal route and we offer the opportunity to join other passengers on the final section of their cruise.

Also here, try the Red King Crab safari - be careful though, the largest caught was nearly 2m (6ft) across! Take a snowmobile out onto the ice in search of these deep sea monsters, and wait for the the tastiest specimen. Lunch will then be cooked over a campfire and enjoyed with relish - or pickle, or however else you like to eat crab!
