Lorraine Silvester, Manager for Discover the World’s Living Planet programme, says a big thank you to those of you who have taken an interest in our educational experiences this year:
“On behalf of the Living Planet team, I’d like to say a big thank you to all our schools and universities who have travelled with us this year. Many of whom have explored the geological wonders of Iceland, and others who have travelled to our newest destination this year – Namibia, one of Africa’s most inspiring countries. This year I am happy to say that we have had the pleasure of helping more groups then ever before to see the wonders of our Living Planet.!"

As the energy levels get back to normal and you start planning for the next academic year – or even further ahead, please contact us for details of our trips and see how you can inspire the next generation of students. Iceland has proved immensely popular again this year - with volcanoes, glaciers, tectonic plates, rift valleys and fissures galore combining with awesome coastal features – it’s a really hot destination with over 250 volcanoes! So as you gently sip your glass of Pimms (or cup of tea, depending on the British weather!) and think “I would really like to go there” – now you can! We are offering teacher’s inspection trips during April 2008 for those of you thinking about taking students on a future educational visit. And now, new for 2008 – there’s a chance for you to enhance your Continuing Professional Development by taking part in a small group adventure, led by a geologist, visiting the wonders of Iceland in March 2008. This special trip leaves on Friday 7th March for three days, during which time you will explore some of the best that Iceland has to offer. Please register now for details of this unique opportunity to see, touch and feel this wonderful country. This is guaranteed to be a great chance for you to exchange best practice with other teachers, and to really see the text book come alive. On our recent inspection trip to Iceland a teacher commented “You should organise these trips just for the teachers – I cannot tell you how much difference this is going to make in the classroom” – so we have! For details of forthcoming educational trips like these, especially designed for teachers please contact us at study@discovertheworld.co.uk
Antarctica remains one of the least visited and most remote parts of the world. As fascinating as it is educational, a journey through the Antarctic is a unique experience for students and teachers alike. We are now planning a special charter for October 2009 exclusively for student groups, so that they too can experience this amazing continent first hand, on a trip which is guaranteed to inspire for years to come! The voyage operator that we work with has many years of experience of operating voyages to the polar regions and the expedition team are acknowledged experts in their field, as well as being members of the International Association of Antarctic Operators, thus ensuring that your trip is carried out under strict environmental guidelines and awareness of the fragile landscape of the Antarctic. We are dedicated to environmental issues and will use a small vessel for this voyage with a maximum of 70 berths, ensuring that we leave as small a footprint as possible in this precious part of our planet. A voyage to the white continent will fascinate, delight and thrill all with its incredible sights and sounds, and abundant wildlife encounters. To register your interest now for this trip of a life time please contact me, Discover the World’s Living Planet Manager, on Lorraine@discovertheworld.co.uk
