The magic begins in October when huge chunks of crystal-clear ice are pieced together, jigsaw style, in the village of Jukkasjarvi. From December through to late spring, this designer hotel opens its doors to intrepid visitors, who travel deep inside the Swedish Arctic Circle for a night in this exceptionally cool hotel.
Nearly everything in this entire complex, from the sculpted beds to the hotel’s own chapel, is made out of ice; even the delicately carved chandeliers which were once flowing water.
By day you can scoot off across the powder behind a pack of exuberant huskies, with only the sound of your sledge’s runners gliding through the soft snow for company. By night you can hop on your own snowmobile and head out into the inky blackness in search of the Northern Lights.
Back at the ICEHOTEL, there’s just enough time to hit the ‘Absolut Bar’ for a cocktail, served in glasses carved out of ice, before turning in for the night.
