Introduction to Costa Rica
Witness an erupting volcano
Experience first hand one of Mother Natures most spectacular events. Since 1968 the Arenal Volcano has erupted daily – view it on a clear day or at night, to see its impressive fireworks at their best. You may wish to take the gentle 2½ hour volcano hike through a wellprotected secondary forest. The hike begins on the active side of the volcano then it takes you through the forest over recent lava flows, to a previously destroyed area now in the process of regeneration.
Eco systems
Tropical dry forests, tropical rainforests and mangroves are among 12 identified eco systems in Costa Rica. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve will astound visitors with its beauty, bounty and great amount of biodiversity. Wind-sculpted elfin woodlands give way to rainforests where tall trees, festooned with orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines and mosses, rise high into the sky.
Bats represent 50% (110 species) of Costa Rican mammals. You are invited to enhance your knowledge, dispel myths you may have heard about these wonderful mammals and enjoy this adventure into the world of bats. Touch, feed and release safely, captured bats in the company of an expert. There is a short guided walk (15–30 min.) to see the mist nets used to gently catch these creatures. The bats are kept for less than 2 hours and the professional methods used ensure the well-being of these remarkable animals.
Rainforest environments
Costa Rica has been very successful in reversing its deforestation and, with increasing forest coverage every year, the goal has been set to become a carbon neutral country by 2021. Learn the importance of reforestation processes and its challenges. This program will end with students planting their own tree to assist towards reforestation.
