Introduction to Jordan
Study Topics - Geography & Geology | Cross-curricular
Mention the Kingdom of Jordan and what invariably comes to mind is the awe-inspiring rose-red city of Petra, carved over 2000 years ago into colourful sandstone cliffs. Nobody forgets their first tantalising glimpse of the remarkably elaborate Treasury, as you approach through the narrow, winding slot canyon.
South of Petra, the Lawrence of Arabia desert of Wadi Rum is one of the most spectacular natural environments in the Middle East, with endless sand dunes and mountains rising sheer from the desert to lofty heights. Jordan offers too that once-in-a-lifetime moment of floating in the Dead Sea at the lowest point on Earth, and for those with historical interests, the Holy Land offers some remarkable religious landmarks and holds a plethora of wellpreserved Roman remains.
